A garden shed was lifted onto a tree, a trampoline was blown onto a path and fallen trees disrupted roads and railways as Dorset was battered by heavy winds.

Wind gusts of up to 70mph swept across the county yesterday causing travel disruption.

Firefighters had an unusual morning – a bizarre scene of a shed in a tree greeted them when they arrived at a garden in Dorchester.

Crews were sent to Grosvenor Crescent just before 9.15am yesterday to find that a metal shed had been blown into a neighbour's garden during the high winds.

Firefighters secured the shed with lines and removed it later in the day.

Richard Marshall, who photographed the shed hanging in his sister's garden, said it blew over three gardens before landing in the tree early in the morning.

It came after the Met Office issued a yellow 'be aware' weather warning for wind covering the entire county between 1am and 11am yesterday. Forecasters said on Saturday that there was likely to be delays for motorists on the roads and bus and train services could also be affected. Coastal communities were also warned that they could be affected by spray and large waves.

Anne Kirkland snapped a picture of a trampoline which had blown out of someone's garden and onto the Rodwell Trail at Wyke Regis.

She said: "Amazingly it flew over a high fence, brambles, briefly landed on the trail then took off again."

Some trains on the Waterloo-Weymouth line had to be cancelled yesterday after a tree fell onto the track in the New Forest.

A 50mph speed restriction was enforced across the entire South Western Railway network due to high winds.

Passengers were already facing disruption due to engineering works closing the line, with buses laid on between Weymouth and Wareham.

Other tress were reported down in the Bridport and Lyme Regis areas, and the A35 just over the border into Devon was also blocked.

Condor Ferries cancelled services between Poole and the Channel Islands

However, although the weather brought chaos for some, keen photographers enjoyed the chance to picture the dramatic waves which lashed the coast yesterday morning.

A weather warning for wind covering Dorset has also been issued for this week as the county braces for Storm Gareth.

Residents have been warned to expect further travel disruption, delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and the potential for short-term loss of power in areas.
