A woman who goes out of her way for charity has raised more than a thousand pounds for Portland Food Bank.

Sharron Plant is a customer service member at the Co-op store in Fortuneswell.

She raised a total of £1337 which will be donated to Portland Food Bank to help feed needy families in the area.

Sharron organised a raffle in December and met with local businesses to gather their support.

She also made it her mission to sell as many raffle tickets as possible to raise money for the foodbank.

Leon Pettinger, manager of the C-op store in Fortuneswell, said: “It’s amazing what Sharron has done. She’s really gone out of her way and thought of others. As a store we aim to be at the heart of the community, and this is just one of the ways in which we can help to support the community.”

Co-op donated £250 to Sharron’s fundraiser for Portland Food Bank.

The cheque for £1337 was presented to Rosemarie Husain, manager of Portland Food Bank, on Tuesday.

Sharron said: “This is the most I’ve managed to raise for charity so far. I like doing stuff for charity and I’m always thinking about what I can do next.

“I decided to raise money for Portland Food Bank because it makes me feel good to be able to help people.”

She added: “I’m one pay cheque away from needing to use a food bank. You never know what might happen in the future. you may need to use it one day.”

Rosemarie said: “It’s just really heart-warming to see the food coming in we are able to buy with this. And it’s straight back out to the needy on Portland, where there is a big need. Things like this enable us to keep going, without donations there would be no food bank.”

Revd Tim Gomm also attended the store for the cheque presentation. He said: “I am so thankful to Leon and Sharron for making the effort to raise such a fantastic amount of money. It makes life so much easier for us. Portland Food Bank is so important for needy families in the area. There have been days when we’ve had a delivery of long-life milk and they’re all gone by the morning.”
