TWO members of Melcombe Regis Rotary Club will take part in one of Europe’s most interesting driving events – the ‘Monte Carlo or Bust’ rally.

Retired policeman Tim Creed and driving instructor Steve Haseldine from Weymouth are joining the epic 1,300-mile expedition for charity, which will take them through six European countries from May 30 to June 2.

Teams are required to buy a car for less than £500 then decorate them in weird and wonderful ways, and will compete for prizes along the journey in several competitions.

The team purchased a 17-year-old, Mazda MX5 with 100,000 miles on the clock. The car has been sponsored by local companies and individuals, with all outgoings such as insuring the car being covered by the team.

All money raised will be donated to four local charities: Cancer support group C’Siders, Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester, Julia’s House and the Veterans Hub in Wyke Regis.

Mr Creed said: “It’s really exciting, this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and now I’ve got the time I want to do it for charity.

“There’s four local charities we picked out to help. We want to raise money for them and perhaps attract new membership to the rotary club.

"The event’s not being subsided, if people donate money it goes straight to the charity.”

There will be a send off event for the team on Wednesday, May 29 on Weymouth Esplanade. This will feature classic cars, motorcycles and other attractions.

Donations can be made to the Melcombe Regis Rotary Club and collection pots will be out on the day.
