COULD you be a Special Constable with Dorset Police?

The Force has launched a campaign to recruit more volunteer officers with application closing at midnight on Friday, March 22.

Dorset Police hopes that Channel 4 show Famous & Fighting Crime will inspire people to sign up to become unpaid volunteers.

The show has seen celebrities such as Jamie Laing, Sandi Bogle and Penny Lancaster working as Special Constables with Cambridgeshire Police.

Specials Constables have the same powers of arrest as regular police officers and wear the same uniform and protective equipment.

They serve alongside regular officers and PCSOs and people need to be able to commit a minimum of 16 hours a month.

Older people and those from diverse backgrounds are being encouraged to sign up.

SC John Hannan, Special Superintendent for Dorset said: “There’s no volunteering opportunity quite like being a Special. Every shift is different, we deal with the full range of policing activities, from patrolling to tackling anti-social behaviour and dealing with traffic incidents. One of the great things about being a Special is that it’s very flexible and you can work your shifts at a time that suits your lifestyle and other commitments. I always look forward to going on duty and giving something back to my community.”

Martyn Underhill, Police & Crime Commissioner for Dorset said: "Special Constables come from all walks of life but whatever your background, you will take pride from giving something back to the community of Dorset. We are also expanding the roles that Special Constables can fulfil, with posts for marine officers, wildlife officers and rural officers all coming on line this year. I am constantly humbled and inspired by the commitment shown by Special Constables and will support you on your journey to becoming a Special and serving the people of Dorset."
