Families who Beat the Street now have the opportunity to navigate the Nothe.

In a new fun health initiative, new orienteering courses are being held at a popular beauty spot in Weymouth.

It follows on from the interactive Beat the Street game which was a hit in town last autumn. As part of the game, players were rewarded with points and prizes for exploring their area on foot or bicycle.

A launch of the orienteering courses is being held on Sunday, April 7 at Nothe Gardens from 11am-1.30pm.

Families are invited along and have a go at orienteering. The event is for everyone to come together, find as many markers as they can and learn some basic navigation skills.

People who want to try out the courses after the launch event can borrow a map from the café near the Nothe Fort car park, the café on the Stone Pier, The Nothe Tavern or Nothe Fort. The map can also be downloaded from Wimborne Orienteers’ website: wimborne-orienteers.co.uk

Rachel Partridge, Public Health Dorset’s Assistant Director said: “We have heard feedback from people who played Beat the Street that they missed the fun, competitive element of the game between family and friends. The orienteering courses are an opportunity to create some more healthy competition.

“We are always looking at ways in which we can work with partner organisations and communities to create opportunities to improve the health and wellbeing of residents. This is a great example of everyone working together.”

Jane Biscombe, Weymouth Town Clerk said: “We are delighted to be offering this new facility to residents and visitors.

“Three courses have been set up in the Nothe Gardens. I would encourage as many people as possible to come to the event and have a go. The courses are permanent, so people can complete the routes as many times as they like and hopefully improve their finish times each visit.”

A number of stalls will be at the launch event and there is also a nature trail for young children. The nature trail is available to do all year round.
