Richard Drax, MP for South Dorset, today asked the Prime Minister what guarantee she could give the British people, “that at the end of June, if we still do not have a deal, we honour the referendum result and we leave.”

Drax was speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions, shortly after the Government had announced that Mrs May would be writing to the EU Commission to request an Article 50 extension to 30 June.

Drax said: “My Right Honourable Friend and this House gave their solemn word to the British people that we would leave the EU on the 29th March – on Friday week,” before asking the Prime Minister for her guarantee.

Mrs May replied that she had made it clear that if there was an extension, “that does not take no deal off the table.” She added that, “I believe it is time we actually delivered on the vote of the British people in 2016 … and as far as I am concerned there would be no delay in delivering Brexit beyond June 30.”

Drax says: “My problem is that trust has gone, destroyed in a Remain-orientated parliament that is hell-bent on preventing our departure from the EU. We have one chance now for a clean break and to regain our liberty and take control once again of our destiny.”

“An extension of even three months is totally unacceptable to me as Remainers in parliament will continue to do what they have been doing – thwarting Brexit.”

“There will be months more rancor, division and damaging amendments, lodged by MPs on both sides of the House, to ensure that we cannot leave at the end of June, either.”

“What is the point of delaying further when we have had two years already to secure a deal? I cannot see the EU agreeing to a short extension, but they are far more likely to suggest a long one, with all its damaging consequences, cost and the likely demise of Brexit itself.”

“We have one chance now to leave the EU, as instructed, and that is next Friday on 29 March. Nothing else will suffice.”
