TOWN Cllr Peter Stein wrote does anyone know why the street lights in Poundbury stay on all night unlike most areas of the rest of Dorchester. The answer is quite simply that most of Poundbury is unadopted and not the responsibility of the highways and thus not covered by the part night lighting policy.
However as Peter lives in part of the adopted area I thought I better confirm that they are following the policy. Indeed yes the area of Poundbury mainly South of Middle Farm Way is part of the adopted highway and is covered by the part night lighting policy. However as many of the roads have speed reducing measures for safety reasons many have to remain on throughout the night. Having all the roads and lighting built to an agreed adoptable standard from completion would be in everyone’s best interest. New sections continue to get adopted but the process is painfully slow!
