MOTORBIKE riders have been preparing for a daredevil race across Weymouth beach.

Top riders zoomed around a short course ahead of the main beach motocross event on Sunday (14).

Over 300 male and female riders will compete on bikes ranging from 125cc to 500cc.

A one mile course, complete with bomb holes', jumps and chicanes, will be carved out on Weymouth beach.

The race programme will begin with an hour's practice between 12pm and 1pm.

This will be followed by six races in three classes - expert, senior and junior - from 1pm to 4pm. Around 100 riders will compete in each category.

Spectators can watch the event for free and any donations made will go to the Lions Club charity fund, who co-ordinate the event with Purbeck Motocross Club and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

Coun Kate Wheller, spokesman for leisure, tourism and the community for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, said: "It is always a great pleasure to welcome the annual Lions beach motocross to Weymouth.

"Over the years this event has built up to be a great headline success for the resort, a massive hit with residents and visitors and raises thousands of pounds for the Lions charity."
