Passengers could expect delays in travelling to London Waterloo from Weymouth after a person was hit by a train this morning.

Due to emergency services dealing with the incident between Surbiton and Woking, all London bound lines were blocked.

Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. National Rail said this includes trains travelling to London Waterloo from Weymouth.

Disruption is expected until 1pm today (Tuesday, April 2).

South Western Railway said it received reports that a person was struck by a train between Woking and Surbiton.

The train operator said: "Our response teams worked with the emergency services to assist with the incident. In order to allow emergency services access to the railway all power to the track was switched off in the affected area for about twoi hours.

"All lines have now reopened.

"Particularly on busy routes, where trains need to run to a very tight schedule, such incidents can cause knock-on delays that continue for hours afterwards.

"These knock-on delays often affect both the route with the issue and any connecting routes. This, in turn, can mean that trains, drivers and crews aren't in the right place at the right time to run other services in the day's timetable.

"In order to bring the services back to normal, we will be forced to alter some of the services. We expect the service alterations and delays to continue until 1pm.

"We are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey.

"If you or someone close to you has been affected by this incident or other, there is always someone to talk to. Contact the Samaritans on 116 123 free at any time, on any phone. Help and advice is only a phone call away. South Western Railway work closely with the Samaritans and support the brilliant work that they do."

South Western Railway is advising that the following alterations will be necessary until further notice:

Portsmouth to London Waterloo trains will run via the Cobham line

Trains from Exeter or Salisbury to London Waterloo will start and terminate at Basingstoke

One of the lines away from London Waterloo is reopened.
