A COMMUNITY hero is calling for repairs to a road after suffering a fall.

Cherril Scott-Morley, who was named the Dorset Echo's Neighbour of the Year 2006, fears older residents could badly hurt themselves in Old Parish Lane, Weymouth.

Miss Scott-Morley, 62, of Franklin Close, Weymouth is also calling for changes at Frederick Place after she also fell and hurt herself there.

She said: "Old Parish Lane is an accident waiting to happen. The surface is bowed and cracked along the length of the road with cars parked all down one side.

"There are a lot of people in their 80s and 90s who go down the street in mobility scooters and use walking sticks, as I do. I'm worried one of the older people is going to fall and break a hip, especially if its frosty and the pavements are slippery."

Miss Scott-Morley won the Neighbour of the Year category in the Dorset Echo's People Awards 2006.

The award was given in recognition of the help she gives her neighbours, including a cancer sufferer, despite having disabilities herself, including a fractured spine and angina.

She added that she has fallen outside Mustoe Shorter solicitors' offices in Frederick Place and believes the council should make changes there.

She said: "I've hurt the muscles and ligaments in my shoulder, injured my left hand breaking my fall and hurt my right knee. The pavement is raised in that part of Frederick Place and that's where I went flying. I've seen other people fall there recently, including a heavily pregnant woman."

Coun Christine James, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council's spokesman for transport and infrastructure said: "We will visit Frederick Place and Old Parish Lane and do what we can to carry out appropriate repairs as soon as possible.

"I am disappointed this person did not contact their ward councillor in the first instance and I would encourage anyone with a concern of this nature to do so.
