Hundreds of bikers will descend on Weymouth wearing pink next weekend.

Next Sunday (April 14) marks the return of the Action on Addiction bike ride.

The event, which is now in its fifth year, raises money to help support people affected by drug and alcohol addiction.

The ride will start from ASM on the Granby Industrial Estate.

The ride’s organiser John Bramble said: “This is the fifth charity ride for Action on Addiction, wWe will be starting from ASM Assembly Systems, 11 Albany Road, Granby Ind Estate, Weymouth DT4 9TH. Leave time for the ride will be at 10am, from there we will ride to the pier at West Bay where we will be marshalled to park, our estimated time of arrival is 10.40am. We will be leaving at 12.30pm which hopefully should give everyone enough time to park up and get a bite to eat, again I ask you all to use our fantastic supporters Snack Shack for food (hence earlier start) or use Windy Corner Cafe at Helmet City who are also fundraising for us all.

“This year we shall be finishing the ride at Exmouth Football Club, 19 Southern Road, EX8 3EE where we will also be having a BBQ laid on for us (small charge for food) which has been organised and sponsored for us by the Budleigh Salterton Lion’s, the bar at Exmouth FC will also be open for us to use and there will be toilets there as well.”

Mr Bramble said he will be riding in memory of his son Craig who sadly died in 2001 from solvent abuse.

He said: “A good 95 per cent of people on the ride have been affected by addiction, whether it’s themselves, their friends, their family, or they know someone who is struggling. We’re aiming to get the message out there.”

Last year’s event raised more than £8,000 for Action on Addiction which operates a rehab centre called Clouds House near Shaftesbury.

The Mayor of Chickerell, Cllr Lyn Wise, will start the ride by waving the bikers off, she has been asked to wear pink – the charity’s colours, along with the other riders.

Mr Bramble said: “We are keeping the pink theme this year. We had a real good turnout last year. I think eBay must have sold out of pink tutus.”

Mr Bramble said: “Before the ride I’d like to give a big thank you to my wife Wendy and the Action On Addiction Admin Team for all their hard work through some stressful times, and lastly thanks to the A Team (marshals) for giving up some of their weekends to scope out the route.”

A donation of £5 is needed to join the ride, which will go towards Action on Addiction.
