A community support hub that was set up to help veterans and the wider community needs donations for a big renovation of its outdoor space.

The Veterans Hub in Weymouth was set up in 2017 by a local man called Andy Price, who served in the Armed forces as well as working in the private military industry for several years in the Middle East and Africa.

On returning to civilian life he realised that the transition for military personnel to civilian can often be a difficult one and that sufferers of PTSD are in need of more support.

The Hub currently serves a community of more than 60 veterans in the area and their families, with Andy Price calling it his 'mission' to make sure these people get the help and support they need.

In a bid to increase the range of services they can offer to the public, the Hub is planning three big projects to enhance its outdoor space.

They plan to build a new gym, some raised allotments and a therapeutic garden area.

Andy Price said: "These will be three very different areas available to families in the local area. We have been supported with grants from the Royal British Legion and Screwfix and the Police and Crime Commissioner will be paying for the gym equipment as well.

"The gym will be called the Neil 'Bomber' Brown Gym, a local man who passed away suddenly and whose family we have come to know quite well. He was well into his fitness and all that as well so we thought that would be a fitting tribute.

"Then we will have the Geoff Trott Garden. Geoff was a veteran that we got to know well and he loved gardening but he took his own life. To pay tribute to him we will name the therapeutic garden after him.

"We want to put in some raised allotments so that people with disabilities and a lack of mobility or people in wheelchairs can enjoy some gardening. Obviously a lot of veterans come back with injuries that affect their mobility so we wanted to make this as inclusive as possible.

"It's a really exciting time for us. We are going to be doing a lot of fundraising for it, with a lot of collection boxes going out all over the town.

"Money has kept the place afloat really since we started but now we have a bit of money behind us and we are finally in a position where we can do something like this.

"We are still about £8,500 short of how much money we need so we are appealing to anyone out there who can help in any way."
