Jump in and push the boat out!

That the invitation going out to Dorset residents in a campaign which enables people to try sailing or windsurfing for free or at low cost throughout May.

Five county venues are hosting Push The Boat Out (PTBO) open days and taster sessions around Dorset throughout the month:

  • Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre Portland
  • The Osprey Training Centre, Portland
  • Weymouth Sailing Club
  • East Dorset Sailing Club
  • Swanage Sailing Club

Push the Boat Out is an Royal Yachting Association initiative which was first created as part of the RYA Sail for Gold Programme which was launched in March 2011. The national participation campaign aims to get more people sailing, windsurfing, having fun and getting active outdoors. Events this year will take place throughout the month of May and will see clubs and centres across the UK holding open days and inviting those who live locally to come and ‘have a go’ at sailing and windsurfing.

The RYA says getting active outdoors has been proven to positively impact physical and mental health. An escape from modern day life, getting out on-the-water is something the whole family can benefit from.

Enjoy the freedom of being afloat, the challenge and achievement of learning a new skill and the new friends you will meet. Meanwhile, youngsters can develop positive life skills like confidence, independence and teamwork.

RYA Programmes Manager Michelle Gent said: “We are delighted that for the second year running, Push the Boat Out will be returning for the whole of May. Open days are a fantastic day out for the whole family and a brilliant opportunity to have a go at some on-the-water activity. Many venues will also be organising tea, cake and barbecues so it’s a real opportunity to appreciate the club hospitality and get stuck in.

“Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned sailor looking for a way back in, there will be something for everyone - find out what’s going on in your local area and get involved."

All kit and safety equipment is provided so just bring a pair of old trainers and your sense of fun. Refreshments will be also be available at many venues, with a host of shore-side activities and entertainment.

Last year, more than 39,000 people across the UK attended a PTBO open day, inspiring thousands of new sailors to join their local club.
