EFFORTS to try and evict a small group of travellers from a Weymouth beauty spot remain ongoing.

Four caravans moved onto a field near Lodmoor Country Park earlier this week. The land is owned by Weymouth Town Council.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Jane Biscombe, Town Clerk, said: "Weymouth Council is aware of travellers on Lodmoor Country Park and we are working with Dorset Council and Dorset Police to resolve the situation as soon as possible.

"We are taking the legal steps available to us, however, this is not an instant fix and it takes time to put the legal mechanisms in place. The community can be reassured that we are doing all we can, as quickly as we can.”

Meanwhile, a group of ten traveller vehicles that arrived in Weymouth over the weekend has now left the town's Park & Ride carpark.

A spokesman for Dorset Council said: "The Park and Ride travellers were leaving yesterday morning just as our Gypsy and Traveller liaison team arrived to serve the section 77 (eviction notice).

"They have left some rubbish so we have arranged for this to be cleared over the weekend.

"The team have carried out an assessment of needs on the four caravans that have arrived at Lodmoor and we are advising Weymouth Town Council on the process of eviction."
