Efforts to help struggling town centres were on the agenda at a gathering of more than 100 business people.

Dorchester Chamber of Business held a spring extended networking business breakfast, with members of Sturminster Newton’s new chamber SturBiz.

As well as discussing chamber initiatives to boost the high street, the event heard how the Dorset Echo and the digital services of its LOCALiQ brand can help business’s marketing efforts.

Chris Spackman, chair of SturBiz, spoke about the importance of helping struggling town centres. He cited the chamber’s plans for Sturminster Newton, including putting together an economic development strategy for the town to draw in families.

It was as a result of these plans that SturBiz – which now has 57 members – evolved.

Steve Farnham, president of the Dorchester Chamber for business said: “We were delighted to be able to welcome over 100 business representative from Dorchester and Sturminster Newton to the wonderful venue at Milton Abbey School.

“The chamber welcomes SturBiz, who clearly have some good ideas to help businesses in their town. We look forward to working with them again in the future for the mutual benefit of our members and the two towns. By working with our neighbours we can achieve much more together.

“We also welcomed an impressive set of speakers. The themes which came out of those presentations were a passion for business and the need to evolve to succeed in ever changing times. We will continue to support our members to do that.”

Tracy Hayden, director of advertising at event sponsor LOCALiQ, talked about the importance of the Dorset Echo. LOCALiQ offers marketing services and expertise in social media and pay-per-click campaigns.

Milton Abbey head Judith Fremont-Barnes talked about the role local business plays in helping Milton Abbey pupils reach their full potential.

Dorchester town councillor Alistair Chisholm spoke about the forthcoming Thomas Hardy Victorian Fair, highlighting the opportunities for local businesses to get involved.

Members then took part in pre-booked one-to-one sessions – providing an opportunity for local businesses to forge more links and collaborate.

The chamber’s next breakfast is on Tuesday, May 14, at Carluccio’s in Brewery Square, Dorchester.

It will be sponsored by Zenna Wellbeing in the Workplace. Rachel Cole and Kitz Gulliford from Dorset County Hospital Charity will be talking about their work.
