Six new homes could be built on a scrap yard site in Weymouth town centre.

Plans for one-bedroom and two-bedroom houses at the scrap metal yard off Upway Street have been submitted to Dorset Council.

Proposals are to clear the site and redevelop it to create the six new properties.

A design and heritage statement submitted by Fisher and Associates Ltd said: "The site has been used as Weymouth Reclamation Yard since the turn of the century. Previous use to that was a coal yard which worked in conjunction with Restoricks Coal Yard based at Broadwey Station Yard.

"This development will enhance a site that for two decades has been utilised as a scrap yard whilst bringing much needed low cost housing to the area."

According to a flood risk assessment, the site edges into an area thought to be within Environment Agency flood zones.

The assessment provided by Fisher and Associates Ltd says "no records exist" of the site flooding in recent years.

A report said: "The proposed development does not increase surface water run off as it replaces a building and hard standings of the same area. Surface water is discharged into the public sewer."

Public comments are open on the application which was submitted to Dorset Council on April 2.
