While Sir Oliver Letwin may be glad, as he says in his Dorset Echo article [April 13], that the immediate prospect of a sudden no-deal Brexit has now receded, he should keep in mind that 17.4million British people who voted democratically to leave the European Union are not at all glad.

In fact, they are depressed and angry that after three years of so-called negotiations by our inept and hapless Conservative Government with the EU officials we are still firmly shackled and under the yoke of Brussels.

Mrs May and her remain backers have completely ignored not only the views of those millions of leave voters but also those of leading politicians and top industrialists who would be happy with a no-deal departure.

For sure, I will bet my bottom dollar that the Conservative Party will be pretty well wiped out at local and national elections. It will take them decades to rise like Lazarus from the dead – if ever. Interesting to note that Sir Oliver’s West Dorset constituency and, in fact, the whole of Dorset, voted to leave in the 2016 referendum.

The only way now to honour the wishes of the 17.4 million leavers is to walk away from the EU with a no-deal Brexit. Acceptance of the Prime Minister’s Withdrawal Agreement, blessed by the EU, would be a disaster for Great Britain. And any further changes brought about following talks with the Labour Party would make it even worse, if that’s possible.

We can leave the EU now. Take control of our borders, sign trade deals with non-EU countries, revive our fishing industry, and take back control of our finances. And, most important of all, restore our democracy and sovereignty. This can all happen if Mrs May stands down and a real true Brexiteer moves into No 10

What avenue could be taken to bring this about? The “white knight” riding in, thank goodness, is the newly-formed Brexit Party, led by Nigel Farage, who brought about the 2016 referendum. The two old-fashioned political parties are in for a major shock by the successes the new party will achieve in forthcoming elections and they will be forced to heed the wishes of the leavers.
