FIRE chiefs have reminded people to call the brigade if they're having controlled burns.

It comes after crews were called to reports of a fire near the coast between Burton Bradstock and West Bay.

Bridport Fire Station said a crew was sent at 12.30pm on Thursday after a fire was seen by a couple walking the cliffs looking towards Freshwater.

A spokesman said: "Once on scene crews found multiple, smouldering burn sights along the hillside between the golf course and Freshwater Holiday Park. Four firefighters made their way up the hill and used beaters to extinguish the hot spots. The officer in charge made enquires and found these to be controlled burns. Advice was given and crews returned to station.

"If you’re planning on having a bonfire, call our control room on 0306 799 0019 and they’ll ask you a few questions. This could prevent us from being called out unnecessarily."
