HUNDREDS of people gathered in Weymouth town centre for the annual Good Friday service.

Prior to the service there was a Procession of Witness, where three crosses were carried from different points in the town to the square in New Bond Street.

Rev Nick Clarke, who helped organise the event, said: “There was one from the Ebenezer Chapel, another from St John’s Church and a third started from the car park at Nothe Gardens. It came down the steps across the harbour and the Town Bridge into the town centre.

“We had a short service of about half an hour. The service was led by Rev Jonathan De Kretser, and his daughter Jasmine led some of the singing. There was music from the Salvation Army brass band and the Rev Tom Coopey gave a talk while Rev Jo Haine helped lead the prayers."

“The Street Pastors were giving out hot cross buns to members of the public at the end of the service then everyone was invited to St Mary’s Church for coffees and teas.

Mr Clarke added: “Good Friday is quite a powerful moment when you remember and reflect on the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, but actually for us all it was another example of unity between Christians who gathered there, we all believe in the same thing.

“Something like 300 people went there for the service which we felt was a tremendous act of witness together.”
