THE CASTERBRIDGE MALE VOICE CHOIR, St Martin's Church, Broadmayne
A PROGRAMME of popular music fitted the bill nicely for this fundraising concert in aid of the village church hall.
From Gilbert and Sullivan to Paul Simon and from rousing spirituals to sentimental love songs, the choir under the leadership of Albert Davies got thoroughly into the spirit of providing a concert of light entertainment, settling nicely into their stride by the time they reached a tuneful Perry Como medley of standard songs from the 60s.
A highlight of the evening was a solo appearance by Alex Foott, who at only 16 already has a baritone voice of great promise.
His rendition of two Richard Rodgers songs showed some fine potential talent, made even more certain when he sang with great feeling and maturity two classic hits from Les Miserables, I Dreamed a Dream and Empty Chairs and Empty Tables.
As for the choir, the harmonies were at their best with the lyrical The Rose and You Raise Me Up and they clearly had great fun with an enjoyable selection from the Pirates of Penzance in a performance skilfully accompanied throughout by Jane Jenkins on the keyboard.
