Earlier this week we reported how drivers were being warned to look out for deer after 'numerous carcasses' were cleared off the A35 Puddletown Bypass. Here's what readers had to say about it...
Surely the simple solution would be to fence off the areas where deer are known to be at risk. Not a cheap solution, but one that will prevent suffering to the animals, and the not so insignificant damage to vehicles, it is not unknown for drivers to die as a result of deer strikes. vegit8
There are a couple of stretches where deer are more prevalent, and I'm always very wary when driving, particularly at night. I agree that fencing is the best solution. I'm sure in the great scheme of things it wouldn't be that expensive as it is done in other places. Monkton2
A friend of mine working in Oman was driving a Landrover and hit a camel laying in the road killing the animal and the Landrover was a right off he was safe. In the desert at night temperatures drop but roads retain heat from the daylight sunshine and camels are attracted to the warmth of the road. Although not his fault he had to pay the camels owner compensation reason he was in their country. shy-talk
The simple - although financially costly - solution would be HIGH chain-link fencing, with "Green Bridges" at REGULAR intervals, perhaps every 200 meters or so. It is unreasonable to expect deer never to cross roads, and this would be the safe way to facilitate such movements. It works in other countries. One thing that worries me with fences, though, is the thought that a grazing Animal might stray onto the road side of the fence where said fence begins, then find itself trapped on a fast road with high fences on either side and no way out. It should be a speed limit of 40 or 50 mph along roads like this with variable speed cameras installed. Dan De-Lion
I was doing 10mph below the speed limit. Deer jumped a fence straight out in front of me, literally tiny amount of time to react. I drive alot in the country and very aware of deer and yet still get the occasional one that just bolts out of a surprising place. Do you suggest people drive at 10mph everyone? dorchbloke
