A POPULAR seaside car park is to close for six weeks to allow urgent repairs to be carried out.

Work to rebuild and protect West Bexington beach car park means it will be closed for six weeks from Monday, October 29.

Parts of the car park, popular with tourists and fishermen, have been eaten away by the sea in recent years reducing the number of spaces to 57.

West Dorset District Council is spending £150,000 to bring the number back up to 87 and protect the car park from waves. Steel piles and hardwood sleepers will be used to provide long-term support and protection.

The work is being carried out now to avoid the tourist season and the worst winter storms. It is the final job in a £1 million programme to improve the district's car parks and toilets.

The car park will close until Friday, December 7, to allow the contractor to safely complete the works.

Signs have been put up and visitors are asked not to park along Beach Road until the works are complete to allow site traffic to get in and out. Access to the Manor Hotel and Beach Café will remain open.
