Weymouth town council’s functions will be dominated by the beach, parks and gardens and public loos.

The new council, which meets for the first time on Tuesday, will be spending £3million a year – much of it on the management of 3.5 miles of seafront, parks, gardens and public loos.

It will be responsible for the health and safety of over one million visitors a year, annually hiring 30,000 deckchairs, 5,000 windbreaks and over 4,000 sunbeds – in addition to managing 10 attraction concessions, 10 catering concessions and four retail outlets.

For parks and open spaces there are 18 play areas to look after, one country park, 7 gardens, 1 sports field, 4 playing fields, and two open spaces at Bowleaze and Bincleaves. In addition there is grass cutting and maintenance of four cemeteries which are in use and 5 which are closed.

The council will also be responsible for the strategic development of Tumbledown Farm and the production, each year, of 38,000 summer bedding plants and 22,000 winter bedding plants from the Lynch Lane nursery, although in time this may move to the Tumbledown Farm site.

There is also eight allotment sites providing 353 allotments and two self-managed allotment sites and grass cutting and maintenance of 18 residential open spaces.

Town council duties also extend to supporting six Friends groups and five volunteer groups and supporting 45 events in its parks and gardens.

It will manage, maintain and, or, operate nine public loos; in excess of 30 properties, 31 leases and licenses, clocks and monuments, over two miles of water supply pipe, 2,000-plus Christmas lamps, seafront lighting and the Weymouth annual events programmes.

Community development and co-ordinating town centre management also come under the new council along with dealing with an average of five events a week for the mayor.

At the moment the council has 35 staff with some vacancies and is expected to need to recruit 12-15 seasonal beach staff for the summer.

The council’s list of assets, along with office equipment and beach items, includes gold maces, a bottle of Calvados, a cannon ball, cuff links, a sail boat, a ship’s bell, a wig, a bullet case and a small coffee table.
