THE reconstruction of Wool Bridge has been shortlisted for a civil engineering award.

The Institute for Civil Engineering shortlisted the project for its People’s Choice vote in the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards 2019.

The nomination recognised the achievement in the reconstruction of the 16th century Grade II listed bridge that partially collapsed in January 2018.

The project was also shortlisted in the category of Re-Engineered Project under £3m.

The bridge has much historic significance, having featured in Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles.

It crosses the River Frome in Wool.

The reconstruction included fitting the bridge with a reinforced concrete retaining wall to help prevent erosion.

The project also required a temporary dam to be constructed around the damaged areas so that work could be carried out there.

A temporary footbridge was constructed so that pedestrians could still cross the river at that point while construction was carried out.

Voting closes 9 June, 2019.

The winner will be announced at the ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards which take place at Bristol Harbour Hotel on 27 June, 2019.
