School children are preparing to show off their talent at an art exhibition in Poundbury.

A new arts project which is currently underway at Damers First School has seen pupils designing Islamic tiles and assembling them for a unique display. The project is inspired by the book Harmony: A New Way of Looking at Our World, written in 2010 by HRH Prince Charles with Tony Juniper and Ian Skelly.

Pengillys Solicitors, which has offices in Poundbury and Weymouth, is supporting the project as part of Open for Art, a bi-annual festival which showcases artists from across Dorset at a range of venues.

Matthew Rimmer, principal at Pengillys, said: "I have been so impressed with the talented students at Damers First School. They have worked so hard to develop the designs for the tiles and then to come together to create a piece of wonderful art.

"We are thrilled to be involved in this creative project with Damers First School and Open for Art and we are looking forward to the exhibition."

This year, the Open for Art festival will take place between May 18 and June 2.

Edd Moore, Year 3 teacher and eco coordinator at Damers First School said: "Damers First School staff and children really appreciate the support of Pengillys in helping to fund art resources for the whole school and Des Alner, a specialist ceramic artist, to work with the children in Year 3 to make Islamic tiles.

"All the children’s work will be displayed at the Dorset Creative Art Centre during Open for Art in Poundbury. Open for Art will give our children a platform to show off their art skills and what they have learned over the last few months."

Mr Moore said the school has been focusing on the harmony curriculum based on Prince Charles' book. Teachers have started to embed harmony within the curriculum by using 'nature's seven principles' - used within artwork focusing on geometry related to wildlife, bees, marine wildlife, life cycles, and fruit and vegetables grown in the school garden.

On Friday, May 17, the children from Damers First School will exhibit their artwork at the Dorset Creative Arts Centre. Students, parents, teachers and governors have been invited to the event where each class with be presented with book tokens by a representatives from Pengillys.

Judy Tate, a local artist based in Poundbury said: "Open for Art is a true feast of creativity with 19 venues and more than 60 artists taking part including private studios and the Duchy Farmhouse. The involvement of Damers really turns Open for Art into a true community event so we are delighted that they could all the children have participated and be able to share this work with a wider audience."

Open for Art trail maps will be available on the Open for Art website. For further information please contact Jude Tate on judytate1@mac.com or visit www.openforart.co.uk
