Dorchester's Victoria Park Post Office could be converted to a house after lying empty for almost two years.

A public campaign was started in autumn 2017 to try and save the business after it was proposed that the office move to Poundbury.

But in the end the post office moved into the convenience store just 50 yards further along Maud Road with longer opening hours.

One of the reasons for the move was that the post office space was too small and could not easily be modernised. It also relied on having a loo and washing facilities in the attached residential accommodation, lived in by the couple who ran the business.

Now Dorset Council has received an application for change of use of the former post office into housing, claiming that attempts to market the retail space have failed and, with living accommodation attached, is likely to only find very limited uses, or remain empty.

Public comments on the application are open until June 9.
