A church in Dorchester raised more than £3,000 at its annual St George’s Day fair.

Every year St George’s Church in Fordington village hosts a fair to commemorate the patron saint of England.

This year the church was raising money to support the general upkeep of the historic church.

Hundreds of visitors flocked to the event to take part in the fun, with various stalls and games put on by enthusiastic churchgoers.

Some visitors even gave archery a go.

Maggie Carter, chairman of the St George’s Church events committee, said: “Thank you so much to everybody who helped with the fair in anyway. Thank you to those that helped set up in the morning, manned stalls in the afternoon and helped to pack up afterwards. I would also like to thank everyone who donated goods to sell and prizes for the raffle, tombolas and other stalls. Please pass on my thanks to those friends and family members, who are not church members but came to help. Thank you to those members of the congregation – both young and old - who opened the fair for us. We had lots of visitors in the afternoon, who were not put off by the windy weather. Everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves and took time to sit in church and enjoy the entertainment – The Durnovaria Silver Band, Dorchester Ballet and Dance Club, The Festus Derrimen morris dancers and some wonderful cello playing.”

She added: “We have raised just over £3000.00, which is a brilliant amount. A special thanks to my fellow events committee members for all their hard work.”
