A live hairdressing competition was at the heart of Weymouth College's Evolve event.

The students, both full and part-time, competed against each other to create a vintage-inspired look in real-time.

Members of the audience were able to see all the students working to fully appreciate the skills they have developed over the course of their studies.

The event was presided over by a judging panel comprised of salon owners Tahnee Thorne and Michelle Acton and Wella’s James Cusens.

Amy Brown won the full-time award. She said: “I’m very pleased to have won the Evolve 2019 competition after plenty of planning and preparation.

"I’d really like to thank my tutors and my colleagues at Morgan-Brown Hair & Beauty for all their encouragement and support, and of course everyone else who participated as you all performed exceptionally. I’m looking forward to what’s next."

Lottie Hansford won the part-time award. She said: “I was a little nervous waiting to go in front of the judges but the tutors all helped in keeping us calm. I loved every minute of creating the image and as soon as I started the nerves slipped away and I got lost in what I was working on.

"I had some really stiff competition and I’m still in shock I won but I’m over the moon.”

Weymouth College lecturer Suzanne Scott said she was overwhelmed by the wholehearted efforts of her students: “These are really amazing students. They have been a pleasure to teach and seeing them working so hard and so professionally this evening in front of an audience makes me so very, very proud.”

Laura Summers, head of the service industries school at Weymouth College, said: “It is great to see so many parents and family supporting our students tonight at Evolve 2019.

"An event like this is so important for the students learning and confidence. The level of hard work and dedication from learners has been fantastic and I am beyond proud of all the students.

“I must also add how proud I am of our Hair and Beauty staff who have supported our students so well in this event."
