FAMILIES flocked to Dorchester to enjoy all of the activities on offer at a big picnic in the park.

Active Dorset hosted the event in Borough Gardens on Saturday, May 18 and there was a fantastic turnout from people across the county.

The day featured lots of different activities such as Zumba, park yoga and Nordic walking.

Charlie Coward from Active Dorset said: "It's all part of a bigger project across the county called Active Ageing which aims to get people active and outdoors to boost wellbeing.

"We have so many amazing blue and green spaces in Dorset so we are really lucky and we want to encourage people to use these spaces."

David Clegg, from Tolpuddle, came down to the picnic with his family and some friends they met at a parents group. He said: "It's really good and a great place to just bring the kids and spend the day outside.

"It's quite a relaxed atmosphere and that makes it perfect for the children.

"There is a lot going on here and it's been a nice day."

Jan Critchell, from Weymouth, was sat watching her granddaughter take part in the outdoor Zumba session.

She said: "I'm here with my daughters, their partners and children. We saw it advertised in the Echo and decided to come down for the day.

"All the stalls are great and there's lots to do like the dancing now."

Chloe Thomas from Active Dorset said: "It's basically about getting people outdoors and and getting active for their health and wellbeing.

"We held a similar but smaller event like this before but now that this has gone so well we want to do more events like this across the rest of the county.

"It has gone really well and we are really pleased to see so many people coming down with their families and enjoying themselves."

Emma Scott from Dorchester Town Council said: "There's a real range of activities and it's about double the size of the last event.

"It's great to have it outside in this wonderful setting."
