People can learn more about the world of farming at a series of open farm days across the county.

The Linking Environment And Farming (LEAF) charity is holding their annual LEAF Open Farm Sunday on June 9 this year.

This event, which has been held each year since 2006, involves farmers opening their gates to the public so people can come and see what goes on in the farming industry.

There will be activities for all the family, including opportunities to meet the farm animals, learn about science and mechanics in farming and try their food.

On their website LEAF describes the event as: “A fantastic opportunity for everyone, young and old, to discover at first hand what it means to be a farmer and the fabulous work they do producing our food, enhancing the countryside and all the goods and services farmers provide.

“Each event is unique based around the farm’s individual story.

“Activities during the day may include a farm walk, nature trail, tractor and trailer rides, demonstrations, pond dipping, activities for children, a mini farmers market or farm shop.”

Farms in Dorset that will be open on the day include Bayard Dairy in Weymouth, Washingpool Farm in Bridport, Symondsbury Estate in Bridport, Field Barn Farm in Blandford and Lower Farm in Blandford.

Sponsors for the Open Farm Sunday include the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, ASDA, M&S, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Co-op.

Information about more farms in the area that will be open can be found at farmsunday.org/visit-a-farm

In addition to the main open day, LEAF will also hold Open Farm School Days, where school children can meet famers and learn about their work.

The days will include hands-on learning for younger children and information about career options for over 16s.

These events will take place throughout June, and more information can be found here farmsunday.org/schools
