A 'quack' team helped an adorable duck family cross the road in Dorchester.

Staff at from Dorset History Centre, based on Bridport Road, were concerned that the mother duck and her six fluffy offspring were trying to cross Bridport Road in front of moving traffic.

Teaming up with colleagues from Dorset Environmental Record Centre, who are based in the same building, they held the ducks back while Alex Butler of the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group quickly gathered items to create a makeshift 'trap' so they could be herded to safety.

Mr Butler said the mother duck was first spotted nesting on the railway sign behind the centre a couple of weeks ago.

"We spotted her trying to cross the road - people stayed with her to stop her getting run over", he said.

"We were able to usher them off the road using a makeshift trap made from a plastic box, some string and a cardboard tube.

"This allowed us to lead them down to the River Frome by Hangman's Cottage.

"I was delighted to see them - it was fantastic.

"The mother needed to get her ducklings down to the water to feed. "Fortunately we were able to help her reach a rich habitat where there's plenty of insects."
