Emergency services were called in the early hours of this morning after a person was seen entering the water.

The incident happened in Weymouth near to the Jubilee Clock.

A spokesman for Dorset Polcie said: "We received a call at 5.18am this morning reporting concern for the welfare of a man in the area of The Esplanade in Weymouth.

"The man was reported to have been seen entering the sea but subsequently left the water and was seen heading toward the Jubilee Clock Tower.

"Officers attended and a search of the area was carried out, with support from the coastguard.

"The man was located at around 5.35am and given appropriate care."

Wyke Coastguard Rescue Team, South Western Ambulance Service and Weymouth Lifeboat also attended.

A spokesman for Wyke Coastguard Rescue Team commented: “Upon arrival at scene the casualty had exited the water and was talking to officers from Dorset Police. The Wyke team, and Weymouth Lifeboat remained on scene until told to leave by the National Maritime Coastguard Operations Centre. With the casualty confirmed in the safe custody of Dorset Police, both teams were allowed to stand down shortly before 5:40am.”
