People First Dorset has joined forces with local businesses to produce a guide helping people with learning disabilities to manage their finances and tackle scams.

The Money Matters guide gives practical hints and tips on everything, from how to create a monthly budget, to how to save up for holidays or special treats, where to get support and advice and how to spot a scammer.

The idea came from some of the charity’s Speaking Up group members. These groups empower adults with learning disabilities to have the confidence to speak up on a number of issues.

The guide also covers how to avoid scammers, both in real life and online. Diagrams clearly break down what a scam email looks like and how to avoid getting conned. Healthy eating was also addressed, with top tips on how to save money on shopping and how to make healthier and cheaper choices.

One Speaking Up group member said: “I was surprised. Everything costs a lot more than I thought! The workshops have helped me better understand how to use my money.”

Lisa Dixon, Project Manager at Speaking Up, said: “Some of the group members had said they find it difficult to manage their finances and would like to additional support.

"We saw Wessex Water were offering funding to support projects looking at tackling debt, and together we put together some finance workshops.

"We worked with our members to design the workshops and the content, and we implemented these with the kind help of local businesses including Waitrose, Coop, Iceland, Lloyds Bank and a financial advisor.

“What has been fantastic is that it has made a real difference to our members. Many have reported that they now regularly check their receipts and change, and they are being more careful not to pay with notes if they have enough change.

"It’s about giving people more confidence and empowering them.”

The booklet is available to anyone for free, simply email office@peoplefirstdorset.org.uk to request a PDF version, or call 01305 257600 to request one is posted out to you.
