Armed officers swooped on an address on Portland following reports of someone with a weapon.
The incident happened at an address on Croft Road yesterday.
Dorset Police were alerted just after 5pm.
A police spokesman said: “We received a report of someone with a weapon, so we sent armed officers to the scene to make sure it was safe.”
A man was detained by officers, but no weapon was reportedly used.
Police said they were unable to give further information about the man at this stage.
An onlooker said ‘it was all kicking off’ on the island yesterday.
Ken Deadman who took pictures of the police activity on Croft Road said: “I had been to a camera club meeting, but when I came back it was all kicking off, there was police everywhere. Croft Road was blocked off and there were about five police cars.
“It was all happening; I’ve never seen it like that.”
On the same afternoon a woman was rescued after she fell down a cliff on Portland.
