HUNDREDS of visitors flocked to Hope Square in Weymouth this weekend for the Fayre in the Square.

The sun shone as residents and visitors alike looked around the various stalls and took part in the many activities on offer.

They were also treated to a line-up of local talent, including Weymouth Operatic Society (WOW), who were performing songs from musicals on the big stage.

Fayre in the Square is organised by the Rotary Club of Weymouth and aims to raise as much money as possible for local charities.

Speaking on the Saturday morning, Roger Fry, president of the Rotary club, said: “It’s a charity event. All the bands and performers don’t charge us a bean for singing, which allows us to give even more money to charity.

“The weather has been kind to us again this year and we are starting to see the crowds build up. Around 20,000 people are expected this weekend and we are aiming to raise more than £16,000, which is the amount of money we have raised over the last couple of years.

“It’s great for Weymouth to have these kind of events. Some people might argue that the crowds will be coming anyway, but I am not sure that’s true. I would suggest we boost the numbers up by around 15 per cent by hosting events like this. They provide a focal point for Weymouth and it gets people over to this side of the town.”

David Langridge of the Rotary Club of Weymouth helped organise the stage, he said: “This year we have tried to mix things up a bit. We have some bands who have played before and some new acts. The weather has been very kind to us and has helped draw in the crowds, it’s a fantastic venue, an ideal place for people to congregate and have some fun.”

Matt Shotter from the New Forest attended the event with his fiancée Gemma Griffiths. She said: “We have been to Weymouth quite a few times. We got engaged here last November, up on the Nothe. It’s been really lovely, we’ve been having a nice look around. We came down on Monday and have had sunshine every day.”

Rob Spears from Weymouth said: “Normally we pop down to have a look around. The atmosphere is great, and the sun is out which always makes a big difference. It’s a good event for Weymouth and draws the crowds in.”

Emma and Wayne Cary from Weymouth attended the event with their daughter Elisha.

Mrs Cary said: “We absolutely love it, every year it’s brilliant. It’s a good community event, everyone comes down for it, you see people you haven’t seen for ages and it makes the harbour a bit more vibrant.”

Wayne Cary added: “Weymouth comes alive in the summer.”
