FIRE crews from seven separate stations including Weymouth were called to a blaze in woodland last night.

The first 999 call came in at 10.22pm. The crew arrived within 10 minutes and confirmed that there was a fire, said a spokesman.

Due to the off road location of the fire, the commander requested the attendance of four heavy off road appliances to the scene, at woods near Sugar Hill.

They were sent from Weymouth, Poole, Swanage and Wimborne, a water carrier from Poole and two Landrover pumps which were sent from Bere Regis and Hamworthy. The crews joined the team from Wareham to tackle the flames.

The command unit from Hamworthy also attended. The fire involved two hectares of heathland and was extinguished using six hose reel jets.

Crews from Blandford then remained overnight, looking for and damping down hot spots.
