Emergency services were called out to deal with a heath fire near Wareham involving a wood chipper.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 2.40pm to a heath fire on Puddletown Road.

The fire was near the entrance to the scout camp on that road and had affected an area of undergrowth of about 20 square metres.

Two fire engines from the Poole station attended the scene, as well as a water-carrier and a Land Rover equipped with a pump.

The fire service asked the police to close the road due to the area of heath on fire being near the road on one of the verges.

Purbeck Police confirmed that Puddletown Road was closed from Masters quarry to Hyde due to this fire. This has now been reopened.

Travel Dorset also reported that one lane of the A31 Westbound had been closed to a fire in the verge.

This was causing slow traffic in the area, but all lanes have been reopened now.

The fire service extinguished the fire using five hose reel jets and beaters, with assistance from mechanical machinery at the scene.
