Armed police officers were called to a house after reports of a disturbance in which a man was in possession of a knife.
Police were called to an address in Bedford Road yesterday morning.
It was reported that a man, allegedly in possession of a knife, was refusing to come out of an address.
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "Two women who had been inside the address left the property and were taken to safety by officers.
"A cordon was put in place to allow specialist officers to deal with the situation and to make enquiries while keeping the public safe.
"The man was detained at around 12.55pm and taken to hospital as a precaution."
The spokesman confirmed that a knife was recovered.
