A capsized dinghy sparked an alert.

Witnesses saw a sailing dinghy capsize near to Bran Point, Osmington yesterday.

They saw a rigid inflatable boat assist the occupants, but were unsure if the dinghy had been recovered.

A coastguard team was called to the scene at 3.20pm.

Officers contacted Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy to ask if they were in area at the time of the incident.

The academy confirmed that the dinghies were part of their activities, and that the capsized dinghy and all its occupants had been safely returned to their base.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: "The academy made enquiries and it was quickly established the dinghies and occupants were part of their activities. They had been practicing down wind, intending to tow back to their base due to the strong winds and rough conditions. They confirmed both dinghy and occupants were safely aboard and on tow by the RIB, making their way back to base as planned.

"The information was then passed to the NMOC who stood the team down with thanks."
