North Dorset MP Simon Hoare has been elected chairman of the Northern Ireland select committee.

The Conservative backbencher was appointed to the role ahead of party colleagues Maria Caulfield and Mark Pritchard.

Mr Hoare last month stepped down from his role as parliamentary private secretary to home secretary Sajid Javid so he could run for the select committee position.

The cross-party committee's remit is to scrutinise the work of the Government's Northern Ireland office and its associated public bodies.

Mr Hoare wrote on Twitter: "Delighted to have been elected as the chairman of the House of Commons Northern Ireland select committee.

"Thank you to colleagues across the House for their support and to Maria Caulfield and Mark Pritchard for a fair contest. Important times ahead."
