Diabetes campaigners have won an award for their activism.

Shona and Tim Freeborn of Weymouth took home the Campaigning and Influencing Award at the Diabetes UK South West Inspire Awards.

The duo run the Diabetes UK West Dorset Group.

Phaedra Perry, Diabetes UK South West Regional Head, said: “Shona and Tim Freeborn truly deserve the Campaigning and Influencing Award.

“They are driven to improve the quality of life and care for people living with diabetes in Dorset.”

Another award was presented to 13-year-old Rosey Edwardes of Bridport, who won the Young Person’s Outstanding Contribution.

The three of them helped with the charity’s Fight for Flash campaign in Dorset last autumn.

This campaign aimed to help more people in Dorset have access to Flash glucose monitoring.

People in Somerset could get it on the NHS, but it was far harder to acquire in Dorset.

Rosey wrote to the Prime Minister to ask for help with making it more widely available.

Since their campaign, Flash is now more readily available in Dorset and can be prescribed across all of England.

Ms Perry said: “Rosey Edwardes, too, can be credited with helping to change for the better the lives of people with diabetes.

“That is a fantastic achievement for someone so young. Our warmest congratulations to all three.

“Our Inspire Awards are a chance to thank our hard-working volunteers, like Shona and Tim Freeborn and Rosey Edwardes, for their contribution.

“It is only because of them and others who so generously give their time that we are able to work towards a world where diabetes can do no harm.”

Shona and Tim have helped overhauling foot care and trialling healthcare apps as well as other work for the charity.

People with diabetes have too much glucose in their blood because their body cannot use it properly.

If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications, while people who receive treatment and support can go on to lead healthy lives.

The Diabetes UK West Dorset Group meets every other month at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester.
