I HAVE been a dog owner all my life.

Over the past 10/15 years there has been a huge increase in dog ownership.

Some working breeds need more exercise than others.

For example, whilst you saw a collie/ sheepdog on farms as working dogs, they are now a popular breed as pets.

They need a lot of exercise.

I use public footpaths which invariably go across farmland.

Some farmers post notices on gates forewarning the public the presence of livestock, removing the notices when clear.

This is a huge help in being prepared to cross the fields.

Gaps in gates can be a problem.

Following these measures may help the distressing sight of a dog out of control and chasing and harming stock.
