Coastguard and lifeboat crews rescued a woman who had fallen onto some rocks on Portland.

A woman was climbing in the area when she fell onto the rocks and twisted her knee at the base of the cliff at Freshwater Bay at about 2.40pm on Wednesday, June 19.

The Wyke and Portland Bill Coastguard Rescue Teams were sent to the scene and placed the woman in a stretcher. However, the teams could not carry her up the steep cliff so had to call Weymouth lifeboat to assist them.

The teams used a 'caterpillar technique' to carry the casualty over the rocky beach and onto the lifeboat.

A spokesman for Portland Bill CRT said: "We use the caterpillar technique to carry a casualty in a stretcher over uneven terrain, we form two lines either side of the stretcher and we pass the stretcher down through the line staying in your position until the head of the stretcher has past yourself, then you would move forward to the front of the chain and continue like this passing the stretcher on until you have overcome the difficult terrain."

Once the woman was in the safe hands of Weymouth lifeboat, the coastguard teams headed back to their stations.
