A CYCLE route in Weymouth is being closed due to 'significant engineering difficulty' at nearby roadworks.

Work is being carried out to replace a burst sewer on Weymouth Way, with a road closure currently in place on the A354 between Chafeys Roundabout and Westham Crossroads.

Dorset Council has now announced it will also need to close part of National Cycle Route 26, which runs adjacent to Weymouth Way.

The closure is effective immediately, and will only be lifted once it is safe to do so.

The cycle path will be closed between the Swannery Bridge underpass and the crossing point on Weymouth Way to Goldcroft Avenue.

Meanwhile, Dorset Council said it has asked utility companies and its highways maintenance team to carry out any planned works at the same time as the road closure to minimise any future works and disruptions.

A litter pick by recycle4dorset will take place today (June 25).
