DORSET was treated to a special weather event last night, with a rare pink rainbow forming across the sky.

The rare weather phenomenon could be seen across the county last night as the sun set.

Jack Hilton managed to get a picture of the event as it formed above Trinity Street in Dorchester at about 8.30pm

He said he had never seen anything like it before: "It looked like something from a sci-fi film. Like it was another planet."

Angela Taylor captured the rainbow above Marie Road in Dorchester. She said: "It was absolutely beautiful. So glad I got to finish work early."

A pink rainbow is an optical illusion. It can be seen when there is a normal rainbow during a pinkish sunset.

Because the sun is lower in the sky, this creates the effect where only the pink colours of the rainbow are seen.

If you have any pictures of the pink rainbow, send them to the Dorset Echo by Facebook or email them to newsdesk@dorsetecho.co.uk
