The manager of a care home said she is "delighted" after it was praised by inspectors for making improvements.

Fairfield House in Chickerell has been rated 'good' in its latest CQC (Care Quality Commission) inspection, after being listed as 'requires improvement' last year.

During the unannounced inspection, staff, relatives, the registered manager and other members of the care home team were spoken to and various areas were assessed.

The service was ordered to improve in February last year, when inspectors found shortfalls in mental capacity assessments, systems used to monitor role specific training and the language staff used when talking about and interacting with people.

A report published by inspectors after their April 2019 visit said "people felt safe and happy" at Fairfield House and "staff understood how to keep people safe from harm or abuse."

The report said: "The new registered manager of the home had settled in well and, with the owner, had helped develop a cohesive and happy staff team.

"People, relatives and staff spoke positively about the way the management had improved the atmosphere of the home and the service people received. People and their relatives felt consulted and involved."

The CQC said "shortfalls had been addressed" at Fairfield House, but that it would continue to monitor intelligence it received about the service until it returns to visit as per a re-inspection programme.

Claire Douglas, registered manager of Fairfield House, said: "I am delighted with the outcome of the inspection, as a home we have worked hard to make improvements we are committed to the values underpinning person-centred care planning, which is followed throughout the organization.

"I have worked closely with the director to implement changes to provide a safe and secure environment for staff and residents."

Mrs Douglas said that people's relatives and staff "spoke positively about the management and atmosphere of the home" throughout the inspection.

She continued: "All the staff in every department played a vital role in helping to achieve our rating.

"Effective team work is an important aspect to our success. Each member of staff has individual qualities, they always work extremely hard, they respect and support each other, this has proven to have a positive impact on the home.

"Fairfield provides a home filled with laughter, friendship and trust not only for the resident, but also for their families."
