Churches are getting ready to say prayers for all the brave men and women who work at sea.

Sea Sunday will be taking place on Sunday, July 14, and a number of churches have been busy organising services to commemorate the event.

There will be a service at St Mary’s Church in Weymouth starting at 10.30am.

Neil Biles, Community Chaplain of St Mary’s Church, said: “This is a great way to recognise the Seafarers and for the community to show their appreciation for all that they have contributed to Weymouth and Portland for many years”.

In the lead up to the service, the church will hold a Sea Sunday workshop which will take place on Saturday, July 6.

This will be an opportunity to make fish, write a story about being a fish for the day and painting a sail.

Mr Biles added: “We have invited schools to take part by making fish, writing stories and much more so that together as a community in Weymouth and Portland we can show our support for these men and women.”

Light refreshments will be available at the workshop. For further information contact Julie Hursthouse, Community Development Officer of Weymouth Town Council on 01305 239306 or Mr Biles on 07867785836.”

Holy Trinity Church in Weymouth will once again be holding a service, including a blessing of the sea.

Revd Andrew Gough said: “We will be holding a service at 10am which will be centred around the sea, followed by a procession over the road, where we will have a blessing of the sea and the throwing of flowers on to the water.”

He added: “Being a seaside town it seemed appropriate to revive the service of the blessing of the sea.

“We pray for seafarers and all those who work at sea, including fishermen and the lifeboat crew.”

All Saints Church in Wyke Regis will be holding its Sea Sunday service on Sunday, July 21.

A contingent from the Merchant Navy Association will be joining the service and there will be a collection for the Mission of Seafarers.

If your church is planning on holding a Sea Sunday service then please get in touch and we will add the details to our online story.
