An inquest has been opened into the death of a man who died after being struck by a train on the Weymouth-Waterloo line last week.

An inquest into the death of Gary Wayne Sellman was opened and adjourned at Dorset Coroner's Court, Bournemouth Town Hall, on Friday.

Dorset coroner's officer Ken McEwan told the short hearing that Mr Sellman entered Pokesdown railway station, Bournemouth, on Tuesday, at approximately 6.11am.

After making his way to platform one, the 27-year-old, of Walpole Road, Bournemouth, sat down on a bench.

Mr McEwan said: "Then at 6.29am a non-stopping train entered the station adjacent to the platform.

"Mr Sellman was witnessed to stand up and run and jump towards the train."

Police and paramedics were called and attended the station.

Mr Sellman was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

A post mortem examination was carried out last Thursday, where the pathologist recorded the cause of death as multiple injuries after being struck by a train.

Assistant Dorset Coroner Brendan Allen adjourned Friday's hearing until November 18, this year, to allow further investigations to be carried out.

Mr Allen said he would be requesting statements from police who attended the scene, Mr Sellman's family and his GP.

The assistant coroner also said he would be working to establish whether Mr Sellman was known to the community mental health team.

After the incident all lines between Bournemouth and Brockenhurst stations were blocked, with services recommencing by mid-morning.

Also in the aftermath, South Western Railways put out the following statement: "If you or someone has been affected by this incident or others, there is always someone to talk to.

"Contact the Samaritans on 116 123 free at any time, on any phone.

"Help and advice is only a phone call away. South Western Railway work closely with the Samaritans and support the brilliant work that they do."
