Weymouth Beach will be transformed into an outdoor arena for a super summer of sport.
The town council has announced the programme of sporting events and activities that will take place at a temporary sports arena on the beach.
This arena will feature a grandstand which people can enter for free to spectate the various scheduled events. There will also be a public address system so that commentary and music can be heard across the beach.
Sports fans will not have to wait long either, the grand opening will be on Wednesday, July 17 with the Royal Navy Rugby Competition.
There will also be football, cricket and swimming events before the sporting summer spectacle concludes with the prestigious Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic tournament on July 26-28.
Weymouth Town Council Chairman of Services, Cllr David Northam, said: “Weymouth is a fabulous destination for hosting events and festivals throughout the year.
"The summer sports programme on Weymouth Beach is always a great favourite, providing a unique range of sports, activities and competitions on one of the world’s favourite playing surfaces.
"This project is a splendid example of collaboration and teamwork, our thanks and praise go to the many local sports clubs, armed forces and tireless army of volunteers that have joined the Weymouth Town Council to help make this project a great success.”
Directors of Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic, Graeme Sawyer and Peter Bennett, said: “We are amazed and proud to be in our fourth decade for hosting the country’s favourite Beach Volleyball Championships on Weymouth Beach.
"With the best players already signed up and fabulous support from the local club, Weymouth Town Council, The Weymouth BID and many local businesses this year promises to be one of the biggest and best ever.
"We are delighted to be part of the Weymouth summer beach programme and look forward to putting on a fabulous event for competitors and spectators.”
