DORCHESTER’S first Children’s Carnival has been hailed a resounding success.

Hundreds of youngsters took part in the parade representing a number of organisations.

The carnival was organised by the Prince of Wales School following the cancellation of the town’s main carnival.

The theme for the carnival was a ‘Celebration of Uniforms’ making it the perfect opportunity for children to wear their brownie, cub or cadet uniforms with pride Headteacher Gary Spracklen said: “It was a huge success and it was wonderful to see so many children taking part in a host of different uniforms representing St John Ambulance, a taekwondo club, the Dwarf Sports Association, rainbows, guides and brownies among others and a number of individuals also took part.”

The event is the first of its kind for the area and its aim is to celebrate the work of local children’s groups, societies and organisations.

The parade began at The Buttermarket in Poundbury and made its way to the school where the Prince of Wales School Association Summer Fayre was in full flow.

Mr Spracklen added: “The parade got underway thanks to Dorchester Deputy Mayor Councillor David Taylor and we were treated to a rousing oyez from Town Crier Alistair Chisholm.

“Lots of people came out to support the youngsters and it was a real community event and we have already decided to do it again next year on July 4.

“We are also extremely grateful to Boo’s Toy Shop for their support and Poundbury Wealth Management who helped with the music in the square.

“We were delighted to have local musician Louise Dukes entertaining everyone.

“Also thanks to the marshals and helpers who kept everything running smoothly.

“But most of all a huge thank you to all the children who did themselves proud on the day.”
